If you go to YouTube and filter for “Golf” and select “channel”, you will see that YouTube has over 402,000 results.
Once upon a time, the only way to push your message out to the masses were the Big Three. If you are under 35, you might not realize that I am talking about ABC, CBS and NBC. Way back when, we didn’t even have UHF channels to choose from.
I remember UHF channels coming into existance mainly because they brought my favorite type of show, cartoons. What can I say? I didn’t have a very nuanced viewing requirement at that time.
So then, in most markets we might have had between 3 and 7 or 8 stations after a time. This was the limit of your video channel distribution until cable rolled out and opened up both the quantity and competitiveness of the offerings to place your video advertising.
We were stuck with cable for 3 or so decades until back in 2005 3 founders built YouTube and grew it for only a little over a year before Google bought it in 2006. By 2007, it was calculated that YouTube consumed as much internet traffic in that one year as the whole Internet used in 2000!
The phenomenal growth has continued and still causes jaw dropping statistics I won’t go into detail here in this post. If you would like to know more, see the latest information at http://www.youtube.com/yt/press/statistics.html and get ready to be amazed.
What YouTubes‘ Growth Means For Your Business
With the info-graphic above, I point out three interesting statistics I am going to review in this article.
If your company wants to target the 18 to 34 demographic, you owe it to your company to review if there is a way to use the incredible reach YouTube represents in your business. With the latest generation of adults viewing more content on YouTube than ANY other cable network (that is network, not channel) you have to realize that the sheer opportunity to get your message out has expanded considerably beyond the (previously) significant amount of a few hundred channels cable offered.
I will go on to point out that should you produce and present a commercial on either network or cable television, your ability to ‘target’ the final consumer does not hold a candle to the opportunities to dial in the types of video’s and video content YouTube provides to get your message to a significantly similar demographic (which includes locality).
317 Million YouTube Viewers is a Drop in the Bucket
Right now, YouTube has over 317 channels with a million or more fans. These fans can often get proactively notified when a new video is shown on their channel of interest. So, if you connect with a channel and they produce a new video a significantly large portion of their viewers are notified bringing them back to YouTube to view the new content, and to see your advertisements.
However; 317 million fans is a drop in the bucket as Google admits that over 1 BILLION unique users visit YouTube every month. For those who consider long-tail opportunities, that is one significantly long tail!
Generation “C” – Not Only Youngsters
Gen C is a powerful new force in consumer culture. It’s a term used to describe people who care deeply about creation, curation, connection, and community. It’s not an age group; it’s an attitude and mindset defined by key characteristics. 80% of millennials are made up of Gen C
The last point I want to make from the Info-graphic is that our focus on those that are younger adults are not the only group who uses YouTube and other online video services (although YouTube makes up for more views than the next 5 video services combined). The breakout is approximately 1 older adult for every 2 younger adults.
If you are focused on teenagers and those younger, stop reading the rest of this article and find out more about advertising on YouTube now!
But I Want to Focus My Advertising!
Ok, I will diverge just a minute to prove a point. Some will say that they are in a very specific and valuable niche which cable (or magazines, websites etc.) provide many opportunities to promote their services or products. Let’s take the Golf Niche as an example. We know that there are channel(s) on cable for Golf, Golf magazines, web sites, etc. etc.
If you go to YouTube and filter for “Golf” and select “channel” results, you will see that YouTube has over 402,000 results.
From the screen shot I am providing here, you can see that there are thousands of video’s offered for viewing from such luminaries as PGA Golf Academy and Golfing World. If I had provided the whole first page of results you would see Callaway Golf and Golf Monthly as well. The quick and dirty calculation (I summed the totals in my head) came up with about 4,000 video’s on golf on the first page alone.
Now, if you are a golf instructor, golf store or any locality based business don’t you think you should look into the opportunities this might provide your company with growth?
